P448 is continuing to bolster its leadership team.

According to the footwear company, it has promoted Lori Sigismondo to the role of brand president. She will report to Wayne Kulkin, executive chairman of P448 parent company StreetTrend LLC.

In her new role, the brand stated that Sigismondo will oversee the global strategy and execution for P448, focusing on the key initiatives of expanding its global retail presence. Other tasks will include enhancing digital channels by elevating P448’s online shopping experience and leveraging its digital marketing as well as fostering innovation, and maintaining efforts to incorporate sustainable practices across the business, the company said.

“I have always thrived in an outside-of-the-box work environment, where an entrepreneurial spirit helped lead to the best options for the business,” Sigismondo said in a statement. “And with P448 I have found that home. At P448 it’s all about community, innovation and creative vision, so I’m excited to continue to forge a path with our talented teams shining its spotlight brighter and farther within all the corners of the world.”

Sigismondo joined P448 in 2018 as chief marketing officer, where she spearheaded the redesign and relaunch of P448’s website and e-commerce platform, enhancing storytelling and global localization—including a dedicated UK site and additional sites in Australia, Canada and Mexico to launch later this year.

Sigismondo also led the opening of P448’s first mono-brand retail stores in New York City and Las Vegas, alongside successful pop-ups in Miami, Paris and Boston. She has coordinated an Asian market expansion under partnership with the Fang Group to include thus far three store openings (Beijing, Hefei and Macau) and a brand Tmall launch, and will further expand P448’s global store footprint within European markets.

Prior to joining P448, Sigismondo spent a decade at Stuart Weitzman within its marketing department, rising to her last position of vice president of retail marketing.

“Lori joined P448 with a strong background in global fashion leadership and has played a pivotal role in the brand’s growth to date,” Kulkin added. “Her strategic insight, creative vision, and ability to navigate a competitive marketplace position her perfectly to lead P448 into its next chapter. P448 is proud to be a signatory of the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles. We are committed, as a business, to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment in the workplace, marketplace and community.”

Shoe Price Increases Accelerated in January — And With Trump’s Tariffs, The Hikes Might Just Be Beginning

Last month, retail footwear prices increased 1.0 percent from a year ago, the most in six months.

Last month, retail footwear prices increased 1.0 percent from a year ago, the most in six months.

Shoe prices began to rise in January after ending 2024 with modest movement, according to the latest data from the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA).

Last month, retail footwear prices increased 1 percent from a year ago, the most in six months, the FDRA noted. This came as prices rose year-over-year across all three target markets. Prices for children’s shoes were up 0.1 percent, men’s increased 1.1 percent and women’s footwear climbed 1.2 percent in January.

In fact, the FDRA said that children’s footwear prices rose for the fourth straight month, men’s footwear prices climbed eleven of the last twelve months, and women’s footwear prices expanded the most in seven months.

“The acceleration in retail footwear prices came as overall inflation sped up and duties paid on footwear imports grew at double-digit year-over-year rates for the fourth straight month,” Gary Raines, chief economist at FDRA, told FN. “The long-term co-movement between trends in duties paid on footwear imports and retail footwear prices is well established.”

This latest increase in shoe prices is just the beginning if President Trump’s heightened tariffs on China remain in place. As for when these increases may hit consumers, FDRA president and chief executive officer Matt Priest told FN last week that they could come as soon as back-to-school.

“If you think about orders being placed and the need to bring in more product for back-to-school, I can envision that’s when these increases may occur,” Priest said. “The other problem is that tariffs are being added on everything from China, so there is a broader concern about disposable income for working families. Their budgets are already stretched, so to add this extra layer it is going to cost more for families with less discretionary income when they look to buy things like footwear.”

But for now, Raines added that action needs to be taken to mitigate further increases. “As inflation and footwear prices reaccelerate, now is not the time for the new administration to impose even higher duties on America’s largest footwear suppliers, saddling consumers with even higher prices,” Raines said.

January’s movement in footwear prices comes at the same time the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that overall inflation accelerated for the fourth straight month.

The bureau’s latest Consumer Price Index (CPI), a broad measure of goods and services costs across the U.S. economy, saw prices increase 0.5 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis in January, after rising 0.4 percent in December. Prices were also up 3.0 percent over the last 12 months, the fastest in eight months.

Excluding volatile food and energy costs, the core CPI rose 0.4 percent in January and increased 3.3 percent over the same time last year.

In a surprise move, Steve Madden is snapping up Kurt Geiger for 289 million pounds in cash, or $360 million at current exchange.

Kurt Geiger’s private equity parent Cinven was first said to be considering a sale of the company back in 2023.

“With this acquisition, we are excited to add Kurt Geiger London, a brand that has exhibited exceptional growth over the last several years. [Its] unique brand image, high-quality and statement-making styles and compelling value proposition have driven success across multiple product categories, led by handbags,” said Edward Rosenfeld, chairman and chief executive officer of Steve Madden in a statement.

The CEO lauded the Kurt Geiger brand’s international following, focus on accessories and emphasis on direct-to-consumer channels, noting the business was complementary to Madden’s existing portfolio.

The CEO lauded the Kurt Geiger brand’s international following, focus on accessories and emphasis on direct-to-consumer channels, noting the business was complementary to Madden’s existing portfolio.

Cinven bought Kurt Geiger back in 2015 in a deal with Sycamore valued at $372 million. Since then the company has focused on building its namesake brand, with major expansion in the U.S. and other markets.

“While we’ve delivered remarkable growth in recent years, we believe we are in the early stages of our growth journey, with significant expansion opportunities available to us,” said Kurt Geiger CEO Neil Clifford. “With its global infrastructure and proven track record of supporting and growing its brands, we believe Steve Madden is the right strategic partner to help us reach our potential.”

The companies said in a statement that Kurt Geiger’s revenue was $400 million pounds for the 12 months ended Feb. 1. In addition to its core brand, the company operates department store concessions at department stores across the U.K., including Harrods and Selfridges.

Steve Madden, founder and creative and design chief of his eponymous firm, marveled at how far his company has come in the past 30 years.

“When I started this company in 1990, I never dreamed we would be where we are today. Owning Dolce Vita, Betsey Johnson and ATM Collection, and now being able to partner with Kurt Geiger, is one of the great accomplishments of my career. The brand is doing better and better every year, and the opportunity to collaborate with them is thrilling. I get goosebumps just thinking about it,” he said.

7 Best Compression Socks of 2024

Compression socks offer relief to a wide range of people including athletes, pregnant people, travelers, those recovering from surgery, and individuals who are on their feet for long hours. As Kelvin Fernandez, MD, an internal medicine physician and medical residency advisor for Ace Med Boards, explains, “They provide graduated compression, with the tightest compression starting at the ankles and then decreasing up the leg.” Dr. Fernandez adds, “This design promotes blood flow back towards the heart and helps reduce swelling and can prevent blood clots.”

After putting in the research and speaking to experts, we landed on this list of options to help you find the best compression socks for your needs. The Pro Compression Elite Compression Socks earns our top recommendation because it’s available in various sizes and compression ratings and its moisture-wicking fabric keeps you comfortable.

Pro Compression Elite Compression Socks  »

Pro Compression Elite Compression Socks

The Pro Compression Elite Compression Socks, which have a compression rating of 20 to 30 millimeters of mercury (mmHg), are a suitable choice for those looking for firm compression to help with recovering from surgery or alleviating swelling from other causes. For reference, socks with an 8- to 15-mmHg rating offer light compression, while a pair with a 30- to 40-mmHg rating is advised for those with severe swelling or blood clots.

The knee-high socks are designed to provide support to the tendons and muscles as they help increase blood flow. Each sock features a padded heel to help users remain more comfortable when standing for extended periods.

These compression socks are made from a moisture-wicking blend of nylon and spandex. They’re available in three different sizes to accommodate a range of shoe sizes and calf circumferences (up to 19 inches). The socks are machine-washable but should be line-dried. Pro Compression offers five different color options, including heather gray, black, neon blue, berry, and teal.

Specs

List Price: $35
Materials: Nylon and spandex
Compression Level: 20-30 mmHg

Charmking Compression Socks  »

Charmking Compression Socks

The Charmking Compressions Socks retail for about $25 for an eight-pack, which is comparably priced to many of the individual pairs of compression socks on our list. The socks offer moderate pressure of 15 to 20 mmHg, making them a suitable choice to support many everyday activities, such as exercising, running, hiking, or traveling.

Charmking makes these socks in two sizes: Small-Medium and Large-X-Large. Made from a blend of nylon and spandex, they offer a breathable feel. There’s a wide assortment of color and pattern combinations to choose from – more than 40 in total. With neutral, solid, and vibrant options, each individual can find the right fit for their style and preferences.

List Price: $26.99 (eight-pack)
Materials: Nylon and spandex
Compression Level: 15-20 mmHg

SB Sox Compression Socks  »

SB Sox Compression Socks

The SB Sox Compression Socks are a top pick for runners and other athletes looking to enhance blood flow during their workouts. They offer a compression level of 20 to 30 mmHg and are available in four sizes to offer a comfortable fit for a range of users. Choose from 22 different color and pattern options, each with a lightweight and breathable feel, reinforced heels and toes, arch support, and a no-slip upper calf cuff.

Aashish Rastogi, a personal trainer and the CEO of the online sports store SportsUncle, highlighted this pair as one of his favorite compression socks. He says, “While I’m not a medical professional, from a sports and fitness perspective, I recommend SB SOX Compression Socks. They offer balanced compression and superior comfort and are made from high-quality, durable materials, making them an excellent choice for athletes and individuals seeking everyday leg support.”

Specs

List Price: $24.95
Materials: Nylon and spandex

Bombas Women’s Performance Compression Socks  »

Bombas Women’s Performance Compression Socks

The Bombas Women’s Performance Compression Socks are an appealing option for those experiencing pregnancy-related swelling. These socks offer a firm compression level of 20 to 30 mmHg, which can help enhance blood flow and reduce swelling. Beyond the compression, they’re designed with other features that can help keep pregnant people more comfortable as they progress through their pregnancy. The Honeycomb arch support is designed to cradle the foot to reduce pain when standing for prolonged periods. These compression socks also offer temperature-regulating vents to prevent overheating.

Bombas offers three size options to fit women’s shoe sizes between 4 and 13. However, the size chart doesn’t list calf circumference, so you might not find the socks to be an ideal fit if your calf is wider than average. There are three different color combinations available: Pink Lotus, Ocean Fog, and Midnight Storm.

Specs

List Price: $36
Materials: Polyester, nylon, elastane, and cotton
Compression Level: 20-30 mmHg

Vim & Vigr Solid Compression Socks  »

Vim & Vigr Solid Compression Socks

If you’ll be sitting for an extended period in a car, plane, or train for travel, consider trying the Vim & Vigr Solid Compression Socks. These offer a moderate compression level of 15 to 20 mmHg to help promote blood flow as you’re in transit. The socks are also designed for comfortable all-day wear. The moisture-wicking nylon and spandex material helps to pull sweat away from the body to ensure you stay comfortable.

One of the benefits of these socks over several other options is that the manufacturer offers them in extended sizes. In addition to the more standard small/medium, medium/large, and large/extra-large sizes, there are also wide calf options available for all of these sizes. In all, there are six size options to help each individual find the ideal fit. However, the color choices are more limited for these socks than some other options, with only black, navy, and cashew available.

List Price: $38
Materials: Nylon and spandex
Compression Level: 15-20 mmHg

SockWell Women’s Circulator Moderate Graduated Compression Socks  »

SockWell Women’s Circulator Moderate Graduated Compression Socks

Improve blood flow and circulation to reduce swelling with the SockWell Women’s Circulator Moderate Graduated Compression Socks. They’re suitable for all-day wear for a variety of purposes, such as recovering from surgery, traveling, exercise, pregnancy, and more.

The socks are made from a blend of merino wool, rayon, nylon, and spandex. The merino wool gives them temperature-regulating properties to keep individuals from getting too hot or too cool. The merino wool material can also help prevent blisters, minimize odors, and ensure your feet stay dry as you wear the socks. SockWell offers these compression socks in two different sizes and 18 different color options. They’re machine-washable for easy cleaning.

Comrad Knee-High Compression Socks  »

Comrad Knee-High Compression Socks

For those who want compression socks that can withstand the test of time, these knee-high compression socks from Comrad are a strong choice. They earn the praise of Megan Wood, senior editor of the home goods team at U.S. News 360 Reviews, who previously took 10 to 15 flights per month for her job as a hotel reviewer.

“I needed compression socks that would hold up to regular wear and washings, and Comrad didn’t disappoint,” Wood says. “I’ve had the same two pairs for seven years. After countless flights and washings, they still provide a comfortable amount of compression. No pilling, no rolling, and no lingering odor.”

The Comrad Knee-High Compression Socks use SmartSilver Ions – the brand’s trademarked antimicrobial technology that eliminates odors – to keep this pair fresh even after extended use. These socks are breathable, too, thanks to their moisture-wicking nylon construction.

The toe and heel of this model have cushioning for durability. These socks offer gradual compression, meaning support is strongest at the feet and then it gradually reduces to combat swelling.

List Price: $28
Materials: Nylon and spandex
Compression Level: 15-20 mmHg

The Bottom Line

The Pro Compression Elite Compression Socks earned our best overall pick. These socks have a compression rating of 20 to 30 mmHg, come in three different sizes and five different colors, and can help wick moisture away from your skin for prolonged comfort.

Alain Tanbe, MD, a vascular surgeon at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, stresses the importance of compression socks. Dr. Tanbe says, “I believe that in our current lifestyle, there is a lot of standing and sitting involved and that can lead to venous insufficiency and leg swelling in the future. Also, long car rides and flights are known to be a risk for developing blood clots, so wearing the compression helps prevent that.” Keep his words in mind as you finalize your decision about which of our recommendations is the best fit for your needs.

Material and Breathability: Compression socks can be made from a variety of materials, including cotton, wool, nylon, and spandex. The right material for you will likely depend on where you plan to wear the socks, your comfort preferences, and the temperature.

Polyester, nylon, spandex, and other synthetic materials are often used to make compression socks. These materials are known for their durability. They’re also moisture-wicking, which can help you stay cool on a warm day or when exercising.

Cotton is another common choice for use during warm weather or strenuous exercise. Cotton compression socks will offer breathability to help keep your feet and legs from getting overheated. You may also see some compression socks made from wool. While many see wool as only suitable for cold weather, the natural fiber can be worn in different climates thanks to its temperature-regulating capabilities. Merino wool compression socks, in particular, can help keep you cooler on a hot day or warmer on a cold day.

Size Range: Compression socks aren’t a one-size-fits-all product. As you shop, pay attention to the available size range for each pair you’re considering. Most companies should offer a size chart to help you ensure a proper fit.

Beyond your foot length and shoe size, there’s another important measurement to keep in mind when buying knee-length compression socks: the width of your calf. Using a tape measure to find the circumference of your calf and choosing a sock that will offer an appropriate fit can help prevent the socks from sliding down, bunching up, or being tighter than they should. Not all manufacturers offer different size options based on calf circumference. If you’re having a hard time finding a pair of compression socks that fit correctly or you have a wider or thinner calf than the average person, looking for a size chart with this measurement may be important.

Compression Level: Fernandez of Ace Med Boards explains, “Determining the appropriate compression level for compression socks is quite important and should be based on the reason for using them.” He shares, “Compression levels are measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg), and they range from light pressure to very firm pressure.”

The right pressure level will vary based on your needs, Fernandez remarks. Light compression socks with a pressure level between 8 and 15 mmHg should be adequate for mild swelling, while a moderate compression level between 15 and 20 mmHg is generally recommended for moderate or more severe swelling. As Fernadez notes, this level of pressure can also help “prevent deep vein thrombosis during long periods of immobility, such as plane flights.”

For other more serious medical conditions, a doctor’s prescription may be necessary to obtain extra-firm compression socks (compression levels up to 40 mmHg). Some conditions that Fernandez highlights that could warrant the extra pressure include “post-surgical recovery, severe varicose veins, or active venous ulcers.”

Length: Compression socks are also available in different lengths, including ankle, knee-high, and thigh-high options. Additionally, there are also compression sleeves, which cover only the calves and not the foot itself. Tanbe says, “I generally recommend wearing knee-high compression including the foot.” Conversely, he doesn’t recommend compression sleeves. He explains, “They might cause more swelling in the foot or around the ankle.”

Additionally, Tanbe doesn’t generally recommend thigh-high socks. He says, “They are harder to put on and they tend to roll down.” This can impede their effectiveness and make them less comfortable to wear. Ankle compression socks won’t offer the same benefits as knee-high options, so, unless they’re specifically recommended by a doctor, you’ll want to contain your search to options that go up to the knee.

Color Options: While the color of the compression socks you choose won’t impact performance or comfort, it can play a role in the overall style of the sock and how well it’ll coordinate with your wardrobe. Consider what you’ll likely be wearing with the compression socks you choose, whether it be workout gear or business attire, and look for a pair that’ll match your outfits.

Features: If you’ll be wearing the socks to run or perform other strenuous activities, you may want to prioritize finding a pair with moisture-wicking properties to help prevent you from overheating.

Reinforced toes and heels are two additional features to consider. They can add to the overall durability and longevity of each pair of socks, helping you get more for your money. A padded or cushioned sole can help enhance the comfort of the socks, alleviating some of the stress caused by standing on your feet for prolonged periods.

We consulted medical and sports professionals to help us choose the best compression socks. The experts we reached out to include Dr. Alain Tanbe, a vascular surgeon at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland; Dr. Kelvin Fernandez, an internal medicine physician, a tutor, and a medical residency advisor of Ace Med Boards; and Aashish Rastogi, a personal trainer and CEO of SportsUncle. In addition to the invaluable insight that these professionals offered, we also considered the ratings and reviews provided by both everyday users and professional reviewers. Finally, we sought to include a variety of options for different needs, styles, and budgets.

FN Summit 2024 Speakers Revealed: See Who’s on ‘The Hot List’

FN Summit, June 2024, Crocs, Deckers, On, Golden Goose
FN’s power-packed summit is set for June 25.
COURTESY OF COMPANIES

During a critical period for the industry, FN is assembling the innovative architects at the center of the biggest success stories in shoes for a day-long summit on June 25 in New York.

Welcome to “The Hot List.”

In addition to showcasing the new powers, the event — which will take place at 583 Park — centers around several key themes: the hot markets that are driving the industry forward; the retail innovations that are fueling a brick-and-mortar comeback; the AI revolution; and the critical DEI conversation.

“The industry is clearly in a period of transition, and we feel it is vital to have the really successful players on stage to talk, inspire and debate the current state of business and the huge technological advances looming with the wider adoption of AI and retail transformation,” said Michael Atmore, Editorial Director of FN and Chief Brand Officer of Fairchild Media Group.

Below, we reveal the big names who will take stage. More speakers will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Dave Powers, president and chief executive officer of Deckers Brands, has been steering incredible growth at not just one, but two blockbuster brands — Hoka and Ugg. As the executive prepares to retire, he will share valuable leadership lessons and secrets to success.

Speaking of success, Crocs has racked up win after win, thanks to its quirky and comfortable product and attention-grabbing collections. Its influential women-in-power duo — outgoing president Michelle Poole and incoming president (and current chief financial officer) Anne Mehlman — will sit down with FN for a special conversation.

Few brands have captured the attention of consumers like Golden Goose, which has major momentum ahead of a likely IPO later this year. CEO Silvio Campara will open his playbook for summit attendees as the company continues to emphasize its one-of-a-kind product, open cool stores around the world and team up with of-the-moment collaborators.

As the huge momentum in the running market continues, On is racing ahead. Chief Commercial Officer Britt Olsen, who steers the DTC strategy and wholesale partnerships, will give the audience insight into Retail 3.0 as the landscape quickly evolves.

From intern to chief merchandising officer, Saks’ Tracy Margolies has been at the center of the retail world for more than two decades. Through it all, she’s been a central force in the shoe industry and will give us a look at her incredible ride.

The event will also go inside the burning issues shaking up the industry right now.

As corporate diversity progress stalls amid a period of backlash, André Pinard, director of culture at Exposure and former Adidas executive, will lead an important conversation about the road ahead and examine what’s really working in DEI — and what’s not.

There’s no question that AI is reshaping every aspect of the business, from product to retail to hiring. A group of executives and experts, including PacSun chief digital officer Shirley Gao, will look at the huge developments that will drive business in the back half of 2024 and beyond.

The race to get a grip on the athletic footwear and sporting goods retail landscape continues.

The acquisition is JD’s latest move to make inroads in the hyper-competitive U.S. retail landscape, which began in March 2018 when it announced the acquisition of Finish Line for $558 million.

Currently, JD Sports has a fleet of 3,400 stores in 32 countries, and is continuing to expand. Its primary competitors in the U.S. are Foot Locker Inc., which operates 2,600 retail stores in 26 countries, and Dick’s Sporting goods, which has more than 850 doors between all of its banners.

Below is a breakdown of the banners JD Sports, Foot Locker Inc. and Dick’s Sporting Goods owns.

Foot Locker Inc.

  • Champs Sports and Kids Foot Locker are subsidiaries of Foot Locker Inc. In June 2022, Foot Locker Inc. merged the Eastbay.com retail website into the Champs Sports banner, in line with its plan to consolidate the two banners that began in 2019.

New Balance Signs Star Wide Receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. Ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft

New Balance has added a promising wide receiver to its loaded roster of athletes ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft: Marvin Harrison Jr.

The Boston-based athletic powerhouse announced on Tuesday that it had signed Harrison Jr., who played college football at Ohio State. During his college days, he earned All-American honors twice and won the Fred Biletnikoff Award in 2023, which is given to the most outstanding receiver.

Ahead of the draft, which will begin Thursday, Harrison Jr. has been widely projected both as a top-five pick and the first wide receiver to be selected. He is the son of NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Marvin Harrison, who played his entire career with the Indianapolis Colts.

In a statement, New Balance said Harrison Jr. will “play an integral role in the evolution” of its inaugural football cleat collection. Also, New Balance said as it launches its first football products, Harrison Jr. will “help the brand reach young players” and “change the perception that players must sacrifice fit and feel when it comes to cleats.” He will also appear in brand campaigns across performance and lifestyle.

“Family is very important to me and joining a family brand like New Balance felt like I was building a relationship that centers on trust and shared values,” Harrison Jr. said in a statement. “Being able to work closely with the design and product creation team so quickly and helping them launch the new cleats is just icing on the cake. I am excited to do the work and build something that will inspire the next generation and help me excel as I enter my professional football career.”

During his final season at Ohio State, Harrison Jr.’s stats included 14 touchdowns, 67 receptions and 1,211 yards. He is now part of an athlete roster that includes 2023 US Open winner Coco Gauff, two-time NBA champion Kawhi Leonard, two-time Olympic gold medalist track-and-field athlete Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and more.

“From the first conversation with Marvin it was clear that he was a perfect fit for us at New Balance, his drive, passion and incredible work ethic speak to the person that he is on and off the field,” New Balance head of global sports marketing for American football and basketball Naveen Lokesh said in a statement. “His dedication to everything he does will help us launch New Balance into the American football category and push the boundaries of what athletes can do to inspire the next generation. We are excited to start this journey together and co-author our legacy in sport culture.”

The 2024 NFL Draft will take place April 25-27, and coverage will be provided by NFL Network, ABC, ESPN and ESPN Deportes.

Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas love mules.

From what started out as a fun podcast idea when they both worked at Highsnobiety, the duo’s Muleboyz project has since amassed an audience of nearly 44,000 Instagram followers and has brought in multiple brand collaborations in just a few short years.

Indeed, the menswear industry’s go-to mule experts – who frequently work with brands like Birkenstock and Lusso Cloud – have given the term “side hustle” a new meaning; often merging their love of mules into their “day jobs.”

This was notably seen when Birkenstock released an exclusive Muleboyz blue colorway of its popular Boston model at Nordstrom in the summer of 2022, followed by a green colorway for the retailer last summer. (DeLeon is the men’s fashion director at Nordstrom. Thomas also works in the industry as the associate fashion director for men’s and kids at Macy’s.)

The duo’s rise in popularity also makes sense given the increased interest in mules for men over the last few years. According to recent data from Circana’s Retail Tracking Service, sales for men’s mules and clogs totaled $492.6 million in 2023. The retail analytics firm also noted that sales are being driven by more premium price point brands like Birkenstock and Ugg with their key mule and clog items. These styles are also gender neutral and are driving the category for women as well, Circana added.

Here, FN catches up with DeLeon and Thomas to discuss the story behind creating Muleboyz, trends in the category, their holy grail mules and how to style the popular model for beginners.

FN: How did you come up with the Muleboyz concept?

Jian DeLeon: We started Muleboyz when we were both at Highsnobiety. We had a podcast there, and we were just trying to find ways to promote it.

Noah Thomas: We came up with the idea when we were on an elevator. I was wearing my first pair of Birkenstocks, the one’s where they collaborated with 032c, and I was wearing those all around the office. You [Jian] had on the Gucci River mules, and you just started yelling ‘mule boys’.

JD: Once we started people began sending us photos of them wearing different mules. A lot of feet photos with the Muleboyz hashtag. Yeah, guys started sending us photos of their feet in mules, and I guess that’s better than the regular feet photos without shoes.

NT: So, our social media presence started as a story highlight and we kept getting so many pictures, we just decided to launch an account. And we just started posting religiously every single day.

JD: Well, I think COVID helped with the adoption of mules as a go-to shoe. For people going on that bodega run or those times you would just leave the house to go get groceries. You leave a pair by the door and they’re very useful. All the brands started to take notice, too. Countless brands started to chop the heel off of their shoes.

NT: There’s always an item that menswear adopts that’s been around forever. Men get excited about these items like they’re brand new and I think we kind of jumped on mules right before it became that item.

FN: What is your go-to mule by the door?

JD: Birkenstock Bostons, Crocs Dylan, the 3sixteen collab we did, the Lusso Clouds.

NT: The Lusso Cloud collab that we did are by my door all the time. Keens are also a nice addition to keep by the door, and I’d also add the Birkenstock Boston forever.

JD: I also keep a pair of LVs by the door too. Louis Vuitton made some nice mules starting with the Nigo collab they did with Virgil [Abloh], and I still have a pair of monograms – I wear those regularly. They’re my flight mules.

FN: What trends stand out in the mule world right now?

JD: There’s a tactical mule thing happening right now that can be seen in the Crocs collab with Beams, and Nicole McLaughlin’s tie-up with Merrell on the Moc Speed 1TRL.

NT: I also like how mules are becoming very light. That made mules a bit more accessible to the average wearer that were concerned with how heavy and clunky they used to be sometimes. So now mules are becoming a lot more lightweight by using EVA or that Extralight sole.

JD: Almost every luxury brand has some version of that molded shoe like the Fear of God California.

NT: That kind of set the category off. I mean Crocs has been around forever and is a bit of a ‘godfather’ in the category. But what actually got the fashion world on its toes immediately, I would say, is the Fear of God California mule. Then that mixed with Salehe [Bembury] doing the Croc made people want to actually spend resale prices on something that wasn’t a sneaker. That’s when everything went crazy.

FN: What have been some surprising releases in the mule world?

NT: The Dior x Birkenstock collab and the Manolo x Birkenstock collab.

JD: The Dior Birkenstock came out of nowhere. There’s been a lot of great collaborations but also in-line at brands like Toga Virilis, which is doing some interesting styles with a big western style buckle.

NT: Also, to see Nike bring back the Clogposite, clearly, they were seeing the demand for the category for Nike to bring it back. That was exciting.

JD: It’s also exciting to see what Ugg has been doing, too. Like the Gallery Dept. collaboration came out of nowhere and they’ve done some great collabs with Denim Tears what were nice.

NT: Those are grails – the Denim Tears x Ugg mules inspired by Tremaine Emory’s great grandmother’s Black Seminole heritage were incredible.

Q: What are some of the greatest mules of all time?

NT: The Birkenstock A630 and A640 mule that’s more of a chef or gardening shoe, that’s the best shoe in the world to me. It goes with absolutely everything. Also, the Hermès clog, the Birkenstock Boston is forever, the Crocs Dylan and the Marni Fussbett. Marni’s Fussbett was one of the first commercially successful styles in the designer space. The green gives very Grinch energy, which I love.

JD: JW Anderson really led the charge in designer mules as well. He started with a lot of loafer takes and the exaggerated chains, followed by the collab with Wellipets on the frog mules. Martine Rose is definitely up there. Not only with her in-line mules with the square toe, but also the collab she did with Nike where she did the Shox with the heeled mule. Those were so good.

NT: Salehe also changed the game. I’m sure Crocs is very happy.

Q: What clogs do you predict will be popular this spring and summer?

JD: Birkenstock 1774’s new 222 West model as well as the main line Tokio. I want to get my hands on those. Also, Martine Rose and her Clarks collaboration, the next one is about to come out with a mule. At.Kollektive, Ecco’s experimental line, should also be watched as well.

NT: Uggs, too. They are making other models and more of a slip on with a rubber footbed, the clog energy is strong.

FN: What advice do you have for guys that only wear sneakers and are interested in trying out mules for the first time?

JD: The Birkenstock Boston is the gateway into the mule world.

NT: I would say the Birkenstock Boston is very much like wearing a raw denim where it’s going to take a little bit of time for you to break it in and for the shoe to mold to your foot. So, I can see how that might be hard to get used to, but some sneakers are not comfortable either. So you just kind of have to get used to it.

JD: But there are also mule-sneaker hybrids. New Balance probably did it the best. They have the 2002R model and the 990 version that looks super sleek. Even Junya Watanabe and Comme des Garçons have upcoming collaborations with New Balance. The Junya collab is more of a loafer, but Comme des Garçons has more of a slip-on coming as well.

NT: And not to keep plugging, but Lusso Cloud as a brand is great. Even they’re whole brand mantra is a ‘cloud.’ I would even try those first as a entry into mules.

FN and Two Ten Unveil Details for Women Who Rock ‘Power of Mentoring’ Event on June 5

Cultivating the next generation of female footwear leaders has never been more critical — and Women Who Rock 2024 will shine a spotlight on the power of mentoring.

On June 5, FN and Two Ten will once again partner for Women Who Rock — which takes place during market week in New York — for an evening of networking, cocktails and content. For more information and to buy tickets, click here.

This year’s speakers will take the stage to talk about finding and becoming a great mentor, valuable leadership lessons and the road ahead for women in leadership. (More speakers will be announced in the coming weeks.)

Our influential lineup includes: Marcia Kilgore, founder of FitFlop; Marina Larroudé, co-founder and chief creative officer of Larroudé; Tamara Mellon, founder of her namesake brand and co-founder of Jimmy Choo; and Sharifa Murdock, chief impact officer at Kith.

Kilgore has founded a number of game-changing global companies in the worlds of beauty and wellness, including FitFlop, Bliss, Soap & Glory and Soaper Duper. In 2016, she launched Beauty Pie, a concept aimed at democratizing the beauty industry and disrupting its outdated business model.

Larroudé is the force behind one of the footwear industry’s fastest-growing emerging brands, which she started with her husband Ricardo Larroudé during the pandemic. During a difficult climate for new labels, the former Barneys fashion director has defied the odds with her mix of trend-right product at accessible prices, attention-grabbing collaborations and social media prowess.

Mellon’s shoe story began when she co-founded Jimmy Choo at the age of 27 and helped turn the brand into a household name. In 2013, two years after exiting the British label, the designer went out on her own, founding her eponymous label with a unique vision. Now Mellon’s growing the business and expanding into wholesale via a partnership with Titan Industries. Last week, she opened a pop-up in Beverly Hills, Calif.

At Kith, Murdock spearheads the brand’s diversity and social impact initiatives and oversees The Kinnect Foundation, the company’s in-house non-profit. Prior to her role at the influential retailer, Murdock worked her way through the trade show circuit, co-founding Liberty and Project alongside her mentor Sam Ben-Avraham.

For more information and to buy tickets, go here or email Trish Reidy at [email protected] For sponsorship inquiries, email Hillari Lazzara at [email protected].

Women Who Rock is being supported by Rack Room Shoes.

As part of our event partnership, FN will make a donation to support Two Ten’s work to advance women in the industry and promote a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive industry.

Eveningwear Design Darlings Sachin & Babi Expand Into Shoes, Handbags

Sachin & Babi are ready for something new.

The married design duo known for their eveningwear and embroideries is taking their business one step further with an expansion into shoes and handbags for the first time.

In what they call a small “test-and-see” collection, Sachin & Babi have delivered a capsule of accessories filled with their signature design details. More specifically, the debut line includes two shoe styles and three bags that the couple say are a response to the desires of their loyal customers who often wear the label’s evening, bridal and occasion apparel.

“Our customers have been asking for accessories to go with our dresses for quite some time, Sachin Ahluwalia said during a collection preview at the couple’s home in NYC’s Tudor City neighborhood this week. “It felt like the right moment, especially given our exponential growth in recent years.”

As for important design details, Sachin points out that bows are “integral” to the brand’s design, so it was essential to incorporate this into their new line of accessories. And while the company does maintain a family-owned atelier in South Mumbai where second generation artisans craft all their embroideries, Sachin & Babi are working with partners in Vietnam to produce the footwear.

“We do make the bows ourselves by hand, but then they’re shipped to our external partners for finishing,” Sachin said. “This also helps keep our collection sitting at the value-driven price points we like to maintain.”

Looking at the shoe collection, which feature cushioned soles, consumers will find the “Lenox,” a closed-toe, obi-bow slingback which debuts in four colorways: Cerise and Noir Flower in duchess satin, as well as Garden Club and Pink Lemonade in faille. The second style, the “Chelsea” is an open-toe strappy pump available in two colors: Electric Lime and Blue Ikat Floral.

As for the bags, the duo has released the “On The Rocks” convertible clutch, which showcases a gold tone finish, faceted step-cut crystal embellishments, fuchsia lining with interior pocket, and a removable gold tone chain with top closure in both duchess satin or Faille. The look is fashioned in six colorways.

The “Bubbly Bag,” an evening look with a silver tone finish, features a pearl and crystal embellished half-moon top handle, fuchsia lining with interior pocket, and a removable gold tone chain with top closure, offered in black and pewter. And, the “Cupid’s Clutch,” in electric lime and silver sequin, boasts a silver finish, a removable silver tone chain with top closure, and what will become a signature fuchsia lining with interior pocket.

The new shoe and bag range, which retails between $295 to $425, is now available for pre-order and will be officially released in February. More styles are expected in coming seasons.

But for now, consumers will have to go direct to the brand’s website to get their hands on the label’s newest addition. “In the future, we will open the categories up to key retail partners, but in the meantime, we want to build this out sensibly and progress naturally,” Babi said.

Since launching their label in 2009, Indian-born husband and wife designers Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia first cut their teeth in fashion producing embroideries for such labels as Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Manolo Blahnik.

Today, Sachin & Babi has a growing global presence with an international e-commerce business and a select in-store offering with preferred retailers both internationally and domestically. Their designs have been seen on the likes of Michelle Obama, Priyanka Chopra, Jennifer Lopez and Taylor Swift.
